Looking back on the Solheim Cup & looking ahead to 2027 | Interview with Sabine Riezebos, General Manager - Bernardus Golf

Looking back on the Solheim Cup, what are you most proud of, and which moment will stay with you personally?

I am incredibly proud of our team. Hosting the 2026 Solheim Cup was a once-in-a-lifetime experience, and it took an enormous amount of dedication, passion, and teamwork to make it happen. What stood out was how everyone came together and embraced the challenge, while remaining true to what Bernardus stands for: genuine hospitality and making people feel welcome.

Personally, I will always remember the atmosphere during tournament week. Seeing Bernardus come alive, welcoming people from all over the world, and witnessing the pride of our team and members was truly special. You could really feel what we had built together, and that is something I will carry with me for a long time.

What did hosting the event reveal about Bernardus, and what would you most like international golfers to know about the venue beyond the tournament?

The Solheim Cup gave us the opportunity to show that Bernardus is much more than a championship golf course. We are immensely proud of the course itself, but what makes a visit memorable is the combination of the facilities and, above all, our people.

I would love for international golfers to discover Bernardus beyond the tournament: to experience the course, enjoy dinner at our Michelin-starred restaurant, Nami by Bernardus, stay at our Lodge, and take the time to enjoy everything we have to offer. We want people to leave feeling they have discovered a place they would love to return to.

How do you see the Solheim Cup shaping Bernardus’ future, and have you noticed any changes in interest from international visitors or tour operators?

The Solheim Cup has given Bernardus a valuable international platform, introducing us to a much wider audience and showcasing the quality of our course and hospitality on a global stage.

For us, the most important thing now is to build on that momentum. We want to welcome more international golfers, while preserving the personal attention and quality that define a visit to Bernardus.

We are seeing growing interest from international golfers and the travel industry, and I believe there is a real opportunity to develop Bernardus further as a destination in its own right. The Solheim Cup has opened the door to those conversations.

For golfers inspired to visit after watching the event, how would you describe a day at Bernardus and what makes the Day Membership experience special?

We want our guests to feel like a member for the day, with the freedom to enjoy the entire experience at their own pace.

You might start your day with a coffee and some practice on our driving range or practice area, before heading out onto the championship course, where you can play an unlimited number of holes. There is time to stop for lunch or a glass of wine in one of our halfway houses (all included), head back out for more golf, or relax with a drink on the terrace.

What makes our Day Membership special is that sense of freedom, combined with access to our facilities and the same personal attention we offer our members. It allows guests to settle in and make the most of their time here.

For me, that is what hospitality should be: making people feel at home, even when they are somewhere for the very first time.

How would you recommend combining golf, a stay at the Lodge and dining at Nami to make the most of a visit?

My recommendation would be to stay for at least one night, so you have time to enjoy everything without rushing.

I would start with a round of golf, followed by a relaxed afternoon at the Lodge. With eight rooms, it offers an intimate setting and a very personal experience. Guests can enjoy the peaceful surroundings, the heated outdoor pool - open from April to October - as well as the sauna, hammam, gym and tennis court.

In the evening, I would definitely recommend dinner at Nami. The combination of Japanese precision and South American flavours accompanied by a glass of Bernardus wine, creates a memorable dining experience.

The following morning, there is nothing quite like waking up surrounded by the golf course with another day ahead to enjoy it. Having golf, accommodation and dining in one place makes it easy to switch off and settle into your stay.
